Waxing Contraindications Do's and Don'ts!
Read this.
No, seriously. READ. THIS.
It could literally save your skin.
LuLu wants you to have the best waxing experience possible so here
are a list of the necessary “dos and don’ts” to help keep your skin silky smooth and healthy.
Creams, Lotions, Potions and Medications
Individuals currently taking Accutane are not suitable candidates for waxing on any part of the body. They must wait until six months after treatment is complete or have a signed release from their doctor. Waxing while on Accutane may result in significant and deep skin lifting.
Waxing cannot be done over areas where exfoliating and skin thinning products have been applied. This includes, but is not limited to, Retin-A, Renova, Differin, prescription strength AHAs (alpha hydroxy acids, e.g. glycolic and lactic acids) and BHAs (beta hydroxy/salicylic acid). These products work to exfoliate the skin and waxing over these areas could result in skin removal during the waxing process. If you are using professional strength products, please check with your medical provider to find out how long you need to stop using them before your appointment. This also applies to professional grade laser treatments, peels and micro-dermabrasion treatments.
If you are using over the counter, non-professional strength exfoliating products that contain Retinoids, AHAs (alpha hydroxy acids, e.g. glycolic and lactic acids) and BHAs (beta hydroxy/salicylic acid) please stop using them seven days prior to your appointment.
Do not apply drying, exfoliating or oil-based products to waxed skin for 48 hours. If you are on prescription medications, please check with your prescriber to see if you are a suitable candidate for waxing.
While LuLu takes every precaution to keep your skin safe and healthy during the waxing process it is your responsibility to know if your medications and/or creams will cause an adverse reaction. If you are unsure, please check with your medical provider.
Sun, Surf and Sand Contraindications
Please do not suntan directly before your waxing appointment since this may increase skin sensitivity and/or dry the skin out which can result in more breakage and ingrown hair. Also, sunburnt or sun kissed (pink) skin cannot be waxed.
Please wait 48 hours after your waxing appointment before you expose your skin to the sun. Waxing has an exfoliating effect on your skin, and you may be more susceptible to burning.
Have your spray tan applied 48 hours after your wax. If you have it applied prior to your waxing appointment the colour will be removed from your skin by the wax and this may result in an uneven appearance. Waiting 48 hours after your waxing appointment will allow your skin to calm down and lessen the chance of any ingrown hair due to the tanning solution blocking the open follicles.
No splishing or splashing for 48 hours after your wax! This includes hot tubs, swimming pools (public or private) and lakes. Your follicles are still open, and bacteria can enter and that can cause a whole mess-o-trouble. So, if you are going on a fun-in-the-sun trip, book your appointment a couple days before you go!
And just a few more...
Waxing cannot be done over varicose veins.
If you are experiencing any active symptoms of an STI like genital warts due to HPV or sores due to herpes you cannot be waxed until the symptoms subside. Waxing cannot cause herpes, but it can increase the likelihood of an outbreak. Upper lip waxing may also trigger a
cold sore outbreak.
Pregnancy is not a contraindication (far from it!) but you may be more sensitive and there may be increased redness/swelling. Skin removal may occur due to increased water retention and hormone changes that can affect the skin. You can wax your entire pregnancy up to just
before your due date.
